ABSTRACT

(1) The Tenkai edition refers to 1453 editions of complete collection of buddhist sturas printed in wooden types by Tenkai in Kangeizi, Tokyo for 12 years from 1637 to 1648. (2) The material for the type was wood. The type-making technique sufficiently shows script writing style and the types are highly refined. Its technical quality is upper-middle grade. (3) The typesetting technique is highly advanced, with evenly aligned vertical and lateral stripes of character trace. There are few skewed characters, and the tone of ink color is very consistent. The corrections are also precise. The technical quality is upper-middle grade. (4) The brushing technique is highly uniformly, with little variance in ink color thickness, very few spreads of chinese ink, and rare cases of double printing. The technical quality is upper-middle grade. (5) The level of printing technique shows a very high level of upper-middle grade, which can represent Japan's finest early typography.
