A Study on the Works and Lost Sentences by Seong Un, Dae Gok

This study analyzes on the works and lost sentences by Seong Un, Dae Gok. The major findings are as follows: (1) In a dark age marred by frequent massacres of scholars(士禍), Dae Gok spent most of his life as a hermit living in Jonggok, Boeun, and the Songnisan Mountain. Rather than pursuing a successful career as a government official, he chose a life of a hermit scholar living in the wild. (2) Dae Gok’s Works(大谷先生集) was edited by his son, Kim Gagi(金可幾), in the 29th year of King Seonjo’s reign(1596), and the wood block print version was published in the 36th year of King Seonjo’s reign(1603) by his grandson, Kim Deokmin, with assistance from Ryu Geun. It consists of three volumes: Introduction, Body (which consists of three parts), and Appendix. The Body contains 212 poems, 10 free essays(雜著), 4 headstone epitaphs(碣銘), and 3 orations(祭文). (3) Many of Dae Gok’s poems were lost during the massacres that took place throughout his life. They were also scattered during the Japanese invasion of Joseon(壬辰倭亂) in King Seonjo’s reign (1592). As a result, at the time of editing Dae Gok’s Works, not a small number of poems had been lost or had to be rewritten. (4) The writings of Dae Gok and others that did not make it into Dae Gok’s Works include three essays(著述), five poems(詩篇), one letter(書簡), five funeral orations, and four Mallyus(挽詞). These writings are considered valuable assets for those who study Dae Gok. (5) Dae Gok’s scholarly legacy and his life had a ponderous impact on scholars in his own time as well as many that followed. Im Je(林悌), Heo Mok(許穆), Yun Hyu(尹鑴), and others were heavily influenced by Dae Gok’s academic works. In particular, Tak Gye(濯溪) Kim Sangjin(金相進), a member of the Sarim(士林) scholars who lived and died as a hermit in his hometown of Boeun, faithfully followed in the footsteps of this astounding scholar.

A Study on the Publication of Jujadaejeon in Joseon Dynasty

This research is a study on the publication of Jujadaejeon(朱子大全), in Choseon dynasty. Jujadaejeon is a collection of works by Zhu Xi, the well-known Confucian scholar during Song Dynasty. Findings are as follows: First, a collection of works by Zhu Xi was rare books in 15th century, but with the accession to the throne of Jung-Jong and growth of the Confucians in 16th century, Jujadaejeon was first published in 1543 by Kim An-kuk by reference to Cheonsun(天順) edition(1460) composed of 121 volumes. Second, Jujadaejeon was published twice in early Joseon dynasty with the metal type by Kim An-kuk and Ryu hee-chun. Kim an-kuk edition(1543) was first introduced to the scholars of Joseon and made possible the study of Zhu Xi and his books. Ryu hee-chun edition(1575) presented the original version by correcting errors of Kim an-kuk edition through the systematic recension. In addition to Jujadaejeon, three other collections of Zhu Xi's works were transmitted from China to Joseon including Hoiamsimuncho(晦庵詩文抄), Jayangmunjip(紫陽文集), and Hoiamseonsaengjumungongsijip (晦庵先生朱文公詩集). The publication of these three collections of his works was, however, temporary, being restricted to the 16th century when the spread of Jujadaejeon began. Third, Jujadaejeon was published twice in late Joseon dynasty with the wood-block printing by Won du-pyo and Hong gae-hee. Won du-pyo edition(1635), the first publication with the wood-block printing, was distributed in large quantities to enable sharing of ideas. Hong gae-hee edition(1771) presented the complete version by correcting errors of Won du-pyo edition through the systematic recension and collect other books about the Zhu Xi and supplementing other works of Zhu Xi. Publication of Jujadaejeon continued until the late Joseon dynasty with the recognition to the Zhu Xi of the Joseon confucian scholars, at the steps of introduction, making the original version, mass distribution, and making the complete version by collecting books and correcting errors.

The Study of the Compilation and Publication of Gyeongguk Daejeon and of the First Cast of Gapinja Type and Other Early Editioms

This paper is the study of the compilation and publication of Gyeongguk Daejeon and of the first cast of gapinja type and other early editioms. The compilation of Gyeongguk Daejeon began with King Sejo attempting to create a code of law for future generations by revising, modifying numbers and interpreting the overly many departments and sections of law in the previous kings’ compilation and publication of Wonyukjeon, Sokyukjeon, Yukjeondeungrok and regal doctrines. Gichuk Daejeon, distributed on November 16 in the year Yejong became king (1469), was the first publication of Gyeongguk Daejeon. The edited editions of Gyeongguk Daejeon were carried out as Sinmyo Daejeon in the 1st year of Seongjong (1470) and as Gabo Daejeon in the 4th year of Seongjong’s reign (1473), while the complete edition Eulsa Daejeon was carried out in the 16th year of Seongjong’s reign (1485). Eulsa Daejeon follows the format of Chinese code of law The Rites of Zhou in being comprised of six codes. There is a total of 212 articles (目): 29 “Ijeon” articles, 29 “Hojeon” articles, 61 “Yejeon” articles, 51 “Byeongjeon” articles, 28 “Hyeongjeon” articles, and 14 “Gongjeon” articles. Compilation of the Eulsa Daejeon of the 16th year of Seongjong’s reign (1485) was led by the Gyojeongcheong, but no literary record remains of where it was published. However, the First Cast Type being in a printed book makes it probable that it was published in the Gyoseogwan or a typefoundry. The original edition of Eulsa Daejeon has the same form details as Sinmyo Daejeon which was printed and distributed in November in the 1st year of King Seongjong’s reign (1470) and followed in the first month of Seongjong’s second year (1471): the same sajudanbyeon ban-gwak of 25.5 × 17.2 ㎝; daeja 10-stanza 17-character; jussanghaeng; sangha-naehyang-heukeomi; and the First Cast Type. Volume 1 to Volume 3 of the First Supplement Cast of Gapinja Type of the annual Eulsa Daejeon from Jungjong’s to Myeongjong’s reign (1506-1567) is housed in the National Library of Korea, while Volume 5 to Volume 6 of the edition are in the Sung Am Archives of Classical Literature. The worn out large types in the First Supplement Cast of Gapinja Type have thinning strokes, sometimes bending, and some of the thinning strokes show unclear ink color. The newly formed large types of the First Supplement Cast of Gapinja Type have horizontal strokes and vertical strokes elongated and thus made bland, lessening the appearance of the pilsa type. In certain characters the horizontal strokes have been elongated, breaking the clear flow of the letter type. The Reprint of the First Cast of Gapinja Type based itself on the published edition in King Seongjong’s 16th year of reign, and was published from the 16th to the 25th year of King Seongjong’s reign (1486-1494). Volume 1 of Eulsa Daejeon is housed in the National Library of Korea. The large types in the Reprint of the First Cast of Gapinja Type resemble those of the First Cast of Gapinja Type in shape, but being as they are carved in wood the appearance of the pilsa type is blunted. In particular, the horizontal strokes, right-falling strokes and ending hook strokes appear as if they were carved with a knife. The results of this study will contribute as future basic (research) material in bibliography, history, and Korean studies.

China’s Current Philology of Chinese Medicine Eduction Status

This paper was written with a view to investigating the current status of philology of Chinese medicine eduction, which is being educated in the area of basic medicine science of Chinese medicine. China’s philology of Chinese medicine eduction was launched in 1950s when college of Chinese medicine of Beijing opened the philology of Chinese medicine course for the first time and when college of Chinese medicine of Nanjing organized philology of Chinese medicine research team which did not exist before. Afterwards, as ‘Regulation on Management of Research, Organization, and Publication of Old and Rare Books’ got legislated in 1980s, philology of Chinese medicine earnestly became China’s new and unique study area, which began to be educated as part of China’s policy of training of Chinese medicine’s philology experts. This study investigated college of Chinese medicine of Beijing, college of Chinese medicine of Shanghai, college of Chinese medicine of Nanjing, and college of Chinese medicine of Shandong as the educational institutions of the philology of Chinese medicine. In the philology of Chinese medicine research center and philology of Chinese medicine books and culture Institute of these universities are playing leading roles in teaching philology of Chinese medicine to the undergraduate, graduate, PhD, and post doctorate students as part of the curriculum or major, while awarding degrees to them. As a result of review on the education contents of philology of Chinese medicine, which is a course book planned on national level, it was found out that they educate the main contents on 543 kinds of Chines medicine books classified into 16 types (or 20 types) and bibliographical education of Chinese medicine records. Through the above review, this study propose the expansion of bibliographical study area, development and expansion of amalgative study area of bibliography field, setting of foundation for bibliographical studies for researches by subjects, building of the union catalogue of nation-wide old and rare books and bibliography by areas of expertise.

A Study on Gyeongseo-jeongeum Edition and Publication-Related Figures

The most important language taught in the Sayeokwon (司譯院, Bureau of Interpreters) of the Joseon Dynasty was the Chinese language (hereinafter “Chinese”). From the beginning of its foundation, the Joseon Dynasty adopted Confucian classics as teaching materials for an excellent command of Chinese. Gyeongseo-jeongeum (經書正音, Correct Pronunciation of Confucian Classics) is also Confucian classics compiled during the late Joseon Dynasty for the same purpose, i.e., learning Chinese. This paper arranged the editions of Gyeongseo-jeongeum and investigated persons who participated in their publication. The editions of Gyeongseo-jeongeum are largely divided into the wooden movable-type edition and the wood-block edition. As for the wooden movable-type edition, the printing type of Gyeongseo-jeongeum-ja was fabricated for it in 1734 (the 10th year of King Yeongjo’s reign), with a capital provided by Lee Seong-bin, the Qing Language Interpreter, who was from the Jeonju Lee clan and belonged to the upper middle class of jungin (中人). The edition was published in October 1735 (the 11th year of King Yeongjo’s reign). And it consisted of Saseo (四書, Sishu, Four Books), Sigyeong (詩經, Shijing, Classic of Poetry), Seogyeong (書經, Shujing, Classic of History), and Chunchu (春秋, Chunqiu, Spring and Autumn Annals). As for the wood-block edition, it is the reprint of the wooden movable-type edition, and was published in 1784 (the 8th year of King Jeongjo’s reign) after the previous edition’s errors were corrected. Its publication was led by six Chinese Language Interpreters including Hong Myeong-bok. In 1800 (the 24th year of King Jeongjo’s reign), Juyeok-jeongeum (for the Changes of Zhou [周易, Zhou yi]), which had been missing in the existing edition, was published by Kim Ik-seo, who was Chinese Language Interpreter, and was offered to the king together with the existing seven books of the Gyeongseo-jeongeum wood-block edition. At present, their three collections have been handed down and stored at Kyujanggak institure for korean studies (奎章閣). Kim Ik-seo also participated in the publication of the wood-block edition Gyeongseo-jeongeum in 1784.

A Study of Pil-su Hwang’s Jeungsan Yeomrakpunga

This paper compared and analyzed Jeungsan Yeomrakpunga(增刪濂洛風雅), edited and proofread by late Joseon’s book compiler Sinchon(愼村) Hwang Pil-Su(黃泌秀, 1842-1914) with two other versions of Jeungsan Yeomrakpunga by Park Sea-Chae(朴世采) and Jeon Yi-Chae(田以采). By analyzing these books, it revealed importance of Hwang Pil-Su as a book compiler in the publication history. From late Joseon period to early Japanese colonial period, Hwang Pil-Su was an active book compiler who compiled multiple books himself and have part in publishing other books. Among those books he took a part in for publication, Jeungsan Yeomrakpunga, the book written to teach other scholars the poetry, shows significant meaning of Hwang Pil-Su as a book compiler in the publication history. Yeomrakpunga(濂洛風雅) is a book that put together important poems written by scholars from Song dynasty. It was edited by Kim Li-Sang(金履祥) and reorganized by Dang Yang-Seo(唐良瑞) before publication in the end of Song dynasty and early of Yuan dynasty. When Yeomrakpunga came down to early Joseon period, it became important book to read for scholars. During mid Joseon period, Park Sea-Chae edited Yeomrakpunga with his own perspective and published Jeungsan Yeomrakpunga. After Park Sea-Chae’s Jeungsan Yeomrakpunga, it was republished several times in different edition. Jeon Yi-Chae’s edition of Jeungsan Yeomrakpunga shows difference with Park Sea-Chae’s, and it is important since Whang Pil-Su referred to Jeon Yi-Chae’s edition when he was editing and proofreading his. There is high possibility that Ji Song-Uk(池松旭) asked Whang Pil-Su to edit Jeungsan Yeomrakpunga to publish it. Looking at it with perspective of publication history, relationship between Ji Song-Uk and Whang Pil-Su is important. Whang Pil-Su’s edition of Jeungsan Yeomrakpunga shows one section of late Joseon’s publication culture and shows Whang Pil-Su’s compability as a book compiler.
