ABSTRACT

(1) The Saga’s type edition refers to 36 editions printed in wooden types by Suminokura Soan and Hongami Koetsu in Saga, Kyoto for over 10 years since 1606. Its main features include Japanese character type, multiple-character type, punctuation type, decoration book printing paper with shell powder and sprinkled mica, and double-sided printing. (2) The material for type was wood. The type-making technique sufficiently shows script writing style and the types are highly refined. Its technical quality is upper-lower grade. (3) The typesetting technique shows evenly aligned vertical and lateral stripes of character trace. There are few skewed characters, but the tone of ink color is somewhat inconsistent. The edition frame is only in two editions and the vertex is about 1∼2㎜ apart. The corrections are generally precise. The technical quality is middle-upper grade. (4) The brushing technique is inconsistent, with substantial variance in ink color thickness as well as frequent spreads and lump of chinese ink. The technical quality is barely middle-middle grade. (5) The type printing quality is middle-upper grade.
