ABSTRACT

This study examines the acceptance and publication of Zhurujianjieguwenzhenbao(諸儒箋解古文眞寶) between the late Goryeo Dynasty and the Early Joseon Dynasty, analyzing bibliographic items from the historical records and references that remain today. Guwenzhenbao was first introduced in Korea by a diplomat named Jeon Nok-saeng (田祿生) at the end of Goryeo Dynasty. On his way to Kokotemur(擴廓帖木兒), he had a chance to stop by a city called Yenjing(燕京) and brought the book with him. It is estimated that it was around 1366. It was the binary publication culture and the artisans that enabled Jeon Nok-saeng release the first edition of Guwenzhenbao in 1367, while he was in charge of governing Happo (合浦) area as the Dosunmunsa (都巡問使) of Gyeongsang-do Province. Back then, the local publication was conducted in cooperation with the central government while staying independent from it, which fueled the development of local printing skills. Also, high population density and advanced transportation system, resulting from the establishment of Seokduchang (石頭倉), helped the printers gain access to the resources they needed to publish books. The one issued at Okcheon (沃川) area in Chungcheong-do Province in 1420 was published before the Chungcheong Provincial Office moved to Gongju (公州). Though it was authorized by the provincial governor, it is not certain that it was actually issued in Chungcheong Provincial Office, as it does not have any authentic colophon of Chungcheong Provincial Office. History shows that the acceptance and publication of Zhurujianjieguwenzhenbao extends from the late Goryeo Dynasty to the early Joseon Dynasty in terms of time and from Gyeongsang-do Province to Chungcheong-do Province in terms of place. It indicates that prior to Xiangshuoguwenzhenbaodaquan (詳說古文眞寶大全), which gained popularity throughout Joseon Dynasty, Guwenzhenbao had been brought in and published.
