AB - This study presents that there is a new method of sand mould casting which can make the original shape of Goryeo movable metal types, based on the fact that the real shape of the types with the existing method can’t be cast in the original shape of the types. A summary of the casting process of the new method of Goryeo movable metal types presented in the paper is as follows.
① One makes a ‘temporary mould’ by filling an empty mould with moulding sand, and plants the upper part of type of eomija in the ‘temporary mould’ by pressing it.
② One puts ‘a blank mould called a hartle’ on ‘the temporary mould’ which the upper part of type of eomija has already been planted.
③ One fills ‘the blank mould as a hartle’ placed on the ‘temporary mould’ with moulding sand and then makes it firm.
④ One takes ‘the mould full of moulding sand’ with the lower part of eomija placed on the ‘temporary mould’ as the ‘hartle’ of it.
⑤ One digs the moulding sand covering the part of wings of eomija planted in the ‘hartle’ to the height of them.
⑥ One puts ‘a blank mould as the upper one’ on the ‘hartle’ with the lower part of eomija, and then sprays mould release agent and fills the moulding sand after sifting in the end.
⑦ After separating ‘the mould as a sangtle filled with moulding sand,’ one creates a passage of molten metal on the surface of the bottom of ‘hartle’ and then takes out eomija.
⑧ After combining the ‘sangtle’ over the ‘hartle’, one takes molten metal from a crucible and injects it into the metal inlet. And then, one breaks the moulding sand in the mould after the molten metal is cool, and takes out the type attached to the gagiswoi.
