ABSTRACT

Muye Jebo (The Martial Arts Report) was a book that Hankyo (韓嶠 1556-1627) selected, explained, translated, and published six single martial arts such as Gon Bong, Deung Pae, Nang Seon, Jang Chang, Dang Pa, Jang Do in the Kyo Hyo Shin Seo in 1598. This study examined the publication process of the newly discovered Muye Jebo kept in Suwon Hwaseong Museum based on the existing study data, and conducted an empirical study on the existing data. Muye Jebo is the first martial art book published in Chosun and translated in Korean. Not only in military studies, but also in bibliographical aspects, it is valuable as a material in printing culture at the beginning of the late Joseon Dynasty centered on the Hunryeon Dogam immediately after the Imjin War, and also significant as the first book that Kyo Hyo Shin Seo of Cheok Gye Gwang was introduced and converted into Chosun style. It has elements common to the later martial art books, publication methods, and compiled characters which were published afterwards and can also play an important role especially in figuring out the lineage of the martial art books leading to Muye Jebo Beon Yeok Sok Jip in the period of King Gwang-hae, Muye Shinbo which was compiled by Sadoseja in the period of King Yeong-jo, and Muye Do Botongji compiled in the name of King Jeong-jo. As a result of a careful examination of the bibliographic features, it was confirmed that the collection in the Suwon Hwaseong Museum was the same as the one in the of the only known collection of the already-known French Oriental University Library of Languages and Civilizations (BULAC). It was also confirmed that the interim edition in the National Hangul Museum was published 120 years after the first edition in the Suwon Hwaseong Museum. This study focused on making the timing of actual withdrawal of the contents of each publication more clearer by looking to the bibliographical characteristics of the newly discovered books in detail. Comparisons of the collections of BULAC with those in the Hangeul Museum will help confirm the specific facts in that sense.
