An Analysis of the Comic Books Titled Korea-My Home

This research was conducted to review bibliography and contents regarding Korea-My Home which is possessed by KOMACON. As the background of this study, the terms and periodic classification of domestic comic books were reviewed as well as the types, cartoonists, and psycological wars of comic books in 1950s. The results of review on Korea-My Home are as follows. 1) Overall contents are noticeably aiming at comparing the system of South Korea with that of North Korea with a view to serving the United Nations and the Unites States' propaganda on their system advantage. 2) The time scope of the contents covers from 1945 when Korean was liberated from Japan to 1951 when Seoul was recaptured by Chinese Army. 3) The title of this book is written in English (as Korea-My Home) in addition to Korean. It shows the characteristics of anti-Communist propaganda bill, raising the possibility that this comic book was published by either United Nations Headquarters or the US 8th Infantry Division or Republic of Korea Army Headquarters or Information and Education Bureau of National Defence Ministry. It is to be noted that there is higher possibility that these were published by UN Headquarters of US Command or the US 8th Infantry Division, taking into consideration that the role of the US and the UN is mentioned often in the contents. 4) The publication year is judged to be 1952, taking into account the stamped indications reading ‘January 1952’ on the page of the title and the investigations of time range coverage of the overall contents. 5) While the author of this book is anonymous, there is chance that it was produced by UN Headquarters, the US 8th Infantry Division Headquarters, UN Headquarters Korea, or Information and Education Bureau of National Defence Ministry. In the case of cartoonist, the author might have been either Kim Sung Hwan, who participated in the editing of enlightenment poster and propaganda bills or Kim Yong-hwan who participated in the publication of propaganda bills as the hostages of the United Nations Army during those days. However, there is no excluding the possibility that the other person is the author because cartoonists were mobilized to participate in the editing of propaganda as part of psycological war at that time. 6) In 1950s, such printed materials as propaganda flyers and comic book magazines were used as the media as part of psycological war strategy during Korea War. Especially through this study, it was found out that single separate books such as Korea-My Home were also made available. And based on the record of ‘UNIT NO.23’, it can be guessed that there might have been other type of materials or monographs published for propaganda purposes.
