ABSTRACT

This study examined the characteristics of Buddhist scriptures published in temples in Gangwon-do by analyzing them by period, region, and subject matter. A total of 61 Buddhist scriptures were published in 18 temples. The publication of books accounted for the majority of 44 editions (72%) in the 16-17th century, the same phenomenon as other regions like Gyeongsang-do. But there were some growing differences in the 19th century, as opposed to the continued decline in other regions. Buddhist temples in northern Gangwon-do were the center of publication, with 46 editions (75%) being published at Geumgang-san and Seorak-san, including Pyohun-sa (16 editions), YuJeom-sa (10 editions), and Shinheung-sa (13 editions). By subject, 15 editions of buddhist textbook such as Gyechosimhakinmun, 15 editions of buddhist rituals such as Suryukmoocha pyungdeungjaeui chwalyo, and scripture for practicing good deeds such as Lotus Sutra were high. 112 engraver were listed in 41 kinds of books and most of them were active in Gangwon-do. There remains 13 types of wooden plate in Shinheung-sa and 2 types of wooden plate from temples in Bogaesan. This study is expected to be used as a basic material to examine the history, character, and status of Buddhist temples.
