ABSTRACT

This study is about compilation and publication of SeongHakSipDo (The Ten Diagrams on Sage Learning) is written by Yi Hwang (李滉) who led the development of Neo-Confucianism in Joseon in the 16th century and the distribution in Japan in the 17th century. Even after it was first published in 1569, Yi Hwang continued to make corrections, and meanwhile, it was published in various regions. According to Kosachalyo (攷事撮要), there are seven areas publishing this book. Therefore the existing 16th century editions of this book differ in their own revisions. During Imjin War (壬辰倭亂) in 1592, there are much of books looted by Japan, and SeongHakSipDo was not exception. And in Japan in the 17th century, this book was accepted as a collection, manuscript, or commercial publication. In particular, individuals who directly or indirectly accepted the Joseon books were well known to the public at the time, most of whom were intellectuals. And the readers were in possession of both the editions before and after modification. And what was published as commercial publication is thought to have been compromised by reviewing two types of editions through content. As above, the SeongHakSipDo showed some aspects of the distribution and acceptance of Joseon books in Japan in the 17th century. If the same review of other books is accumulated in the future, it is expected that the distribution and acceptance of Joseon books after Imjin War will be understood from the overall perspective.
