ABSTRACT

This research is on the life and achievements of Lee Chai Wuk, the first director of the National Library of Korea, focusing on the Munheon Boguk (文獻報國), Library of Japanese Government Gerneral of Korea’s publication. According to the research result, Lee Chai Wuk is the first library director appointed as a professional librarian in Korea and had many achievements as a scholar of various fields and library director. After graduating Keijō Imperial University in 1931, Lee was hired by the Library of Japanese Government General of Korea and appointed as a librarian in 1939, he is recognized as the librarian who published the first library science book Rural Library Management (published in 1935). According to the analysis for 38 articles included in Munheon Boguk, bibliography fields account for 58% (22 articles) of the material. The research explores his achievements as bibliographer and national library director. This research is meaningful as it is the first study on Lee Chai Wuk, the Kore’s first professional library director, and I hope this will be used as basic study on related research.
