AB - This paper examined comprehensively the development of Confucianism during the Joseon Dynasty that started as a response to the difficulties of adapting to modernity, and became a popular religion declaring ‘the resolution of enmity and the Great Opening (kaebyŏk).’ The paper also investigated the path of popular Confucianism and the path to the peace and the Great Opening that, since the Gaengjeong Yudo that was formed through the process that was equipped with the edification system in 1951, it followed. The path of popular Confucianism means the moral resolution of enmity that resolves all people’s enmity through morality, and the moral civilization that extended to civilization. It is also the path to realize paradise on earth, namely, the World of the Confucian Way with a ‘spring mind (ch’unsim)’ of the divinized person that promotes the sanctity of all life. The path to peace and the Great Opening is the path that proceeds toward the ‘Age of Peace and Unification’ by reviewing the content and the meaning of ‘World Peace through the Moral Civilization of the 44th Century’ and the ‘National Declaration for Peace and Unification’ that succeeded the thought of ‘Words of Peace.’ In the end, this paper arranged in a simple manner the meanings of national history or the history of Korean religions in relation to religious foundation and practical ways for world peace and peaceful unification that the Geangjeong Yudo aims at as the practice of the Great Opening of religion.
