This article is to construct Northeast Asia not as a geological or geopolitical concept but as an social imagery for peace. As we have experienced, the current international politics has failed to find alternatives relevant to the global crises such as the climate crisis, ecological disasters, the pandemic, and so on. One of the main reasons for this failure lies in the fact that nation-state is set up for the agential subject of this international politics. Every nation-state as the subject of the international politics compete each other for their own national interests, and it is thus nearly impossible to talk about the symbiosis or sympoiesis of the planetary community. In such actuality of the international politics, Northeast Asian Community does not refer to any exclusivistic community of Northeast Asians only but rater to a planetary community network, in which they seeks to be agencies of cooperation and solidarity beyond the boundaries and walls of nation-states in Northeast Asia. It is not to deny the actualities of nationa-state in this region but to construct a new model of international politics to include nonhuman agencies as political subjects beyond the anthropocentric notion of human political subject in our common effort to overcome or stay with the global crises such as the climate change and ecological disasters. The bottom line of this way of thinking is our common recognition of religious imagination like com/passion without the trap of oblivion to forget the horrible memories and traumas of pain, suffering, and oppression in our pasts. Thus, in order to construct Northeast Asian Community as common social imagery to come, this paper argues that the Northeast Asia region entangled with their painful historical traumas in their modern colonial times needs some help from religious imaginations. for religion is the source of power for healing and reconciliation, only with the condition that the term ‘religion’ here refers to the concept of the religious, not to any institutionalized form of religion.

Recently, the ‘Korean wave,’ also known as Hallyu, has been spreading widely not only in East Asia, but also in the Middle East and Europe, centered around popular culture including music, art, fashion, drama, and film. The phenomenon of Hallyu as it relates to "the cultural heritage of Koreans" has not been formed from an isolated or fixed spatial perspective on the Korean Peninsula, but from a trans-spatial perspective where various cultures and civilizations of modern society, including Europe and the United States, as well as East Asian civilizations intersect. Korean popular culture and arts that impress people around the world, such as K-Pop, K-Drama, and K-Movie, need to be deepened at the level of the humanities besides the emotional and artistic level. It should not be overlooked that the culture and art developed by a nation originates from their historical conditions and circumstances, and the core of such historical conditions may involve religious-spiritual culture. In particular, Korean culture and arts have a complex and multi-layered religious-historical background; even today, they embrace most of world religions including Christianity, Confucianism, and Buddhism, as well as pluralistic religious cultures such as indigenous beliefs from ancient times and ethnic religions that have emerged in Korea since modern times. This study aimed to examine the status of the global spread of and future-oriented tasks of Hallyu from the perspective of Korean ethnic religion. First, the question of how the root of Hallyu in East Asia evolved historically was determined. Second, the current status of the phenomenon of Hallyu spreading worldwide was comprehensively analyzed. Third, considering the future of Hallyu, the importance of a culture with universal publicness that may overcome anti-Korean-wave sentiment was highlighted. This may be also a way to overcome the tendency of cultural imperialism, such as the cultural influence of the great powers, through the diversification of the Korean Wave. In addition, rather than the Korean wave of popular culture, the systematic spread of an in-depth religious culture throughout Korean culture is needed at home and abroad. The Korean wave will be able to gain the support of people worldwide if Korea's spiritual culture of peaceful coexistence spreads throughout the world.

The Theory of ”Propriety-politics” of Joseon Intellectual in the Early 20th Century: Focusing on Jeon Byunghoon's “Political Philosophy”

This study explored the perspective of Joseon intellectuals on “Propriety-politics” at a time when East and West thoughts were in contact in the early 20th century, focusing on Jeon Byung-hoon's political philosophy. Jeon Byung-hoon was a Joseon intellectual who worked in Joseon and Beijing during the Japanese colonial period from the end of the Joseon Dynasty. Jeon Byung-hoon, who was active in Beijing during the Northern Warlords period in China, wrote General Edition of Mental Philosophy in 1920, which combines the ideas of the East and West, mental, psychological, moral, and political philosophy. In the “Political Philosophy” section, he deals with the political philosophy of the East and West, where propriety-politics is mentioned as the core of East Asian political philosophy, which is a political system that the West should emulate and have values to carry out in the coming future. In Jeon Byung-hoon's political philosophy, the Propriety-politics differs by two levels. One is the ‘Propriety-politics of Zhougong 周公’ based on the case of The Rituals of Zhou (Zhouli 周禮). This is a propriety-politics that can be changed according to the times, and it is a deposit that belongs to the field of Confucian tradition as it aims to change the customs through the edification of the Holy Prince. The other is ‘Propriety-politics of Republican Constitution.’This is a newly interpreted propriety-politics as a result of the preparation of political philosophy thoughts of East and West, and the value of republican, democracy, and constitution is given. The propriety-politics newly interpreted by Jeon Byung-hoon is a propriety-politics that stipulates legal procedures according to the will of the people and mutual contracts of the people, and can be evaluated as having meaning as a social order norm formed through social consensus of individuals with sovereignty.

The Educational Philosophy of the Ahn's Family Precepts: Focusing on Ahn's views on Confusianism an Buddhism

This paper aims to explore the theory of education presented in Ahn’s Family Precepts. This book was written by Ahn Jichu(顔之推, 531∼590) in the hope of giving his descendants useful admonitions. It consists of seven volumes, and includes 20 articles. This book, deliberately produced by a responsible parent, contains the essence of traditional Chinese education. Although Ahn was a prominent scholar born into a noble family devoted to Confucianism, he believed that Confucianism and Buddhism have the same goals and social functions. He thoughted that Confucianism and Buddhism were based on educating people to do good and benefiting the world. This view is reflected in Ahn’s Family Precepts. In his book, ‘Returning Mind(歸心)’ is not only his own Buddhist view, but also actively spreads Buddhism. Ahn defended Buddhism against the criticism at the time, and encouraged his descendants to believe in Buddhism. Ahn advocated for Buddhism in religion, even though he emphasized Confucian views on self-discipline and social behavior to his descendants. Even so, Ahn advocated for and publicized the Confucian value of cultivating one’s moral integrity and strengthening one’s family, and took it as the basis of achieving prestige and fame. In his Family Precepts, Ahn sought mainly to convey traditional Confucianism to his descendants, and told them how to cultivate their moral character, run a family, live a life, and learn. He showed a pragmatic view of learning by emphasizing the position that learning is necessary for a stable way of life and practical ability, while highlighting that one must constantly pursue learning for self-realization. In line with this, Ahn rebuked the uneducated and innocent behavior of the nobles, the narrow learning centered on scripture, and the culture of the time in the state of emptiness and emptiness . He also emphasized the importance of literacy in learning pursuits. In conclusion, Ahn’s educational philosophy can be described as admonitions born from a life of practical study, as a true scholarly intellectual.

Integrated Model of Mindful Practice: Focusing on Three Aspects of Mindfulness

Mindfulness is a representative meditation method that is attracting attention in various fields of modern society today, derived from “sati,” one of the important mind qualities of early Buddhism. However, mindfulness is facing various criticisms due to the change in meaning in the process of translating “sati”, the intentional reduction or exclusion of the overall context of Buddhist practice in the process of applying the program, and Buddhism's passive attitude toward various problems in modern society. Therefore, it is necessary to supplement or expand the meaning of mindfulness. The supplementation and expansion of mindfulness needs to consider the overall context of Buddhist practice. This will first compensate for the meaning that mindfulness was not sufficiently contained in the translation process, and furthermore, it will be possible to compensate for the intentionally reduced or excluded parts, especially the ethical aspect of mindfulness. So first, we looked at the changed process of Buddhist threefold practice, and supplemented the three aspects of mindfulness according to the threefold practice system. Sotaesan, the founder of Won Buddhism, summarizes Ilwonsang's 一圓相 truth into three categories: Voidness or Emptiness 空, Completeness 圓, and Rightness 正. This can be applied to our minds as it is, and we looked at it in three aspects: nature, phenomenon, and action. The nature is the place where “discrimination has disappeared,” the phenomenon is the place where “accepting and observing the appeared discrimination as it is,” and the action is the place where “selecting discrimination between right and wrong.” Accordingly, mindfulness or awareness can also be seen in three aspects: (1) “phenomenon-mindfulness” or mindfulness to accept and observe phenomena as they are, (2) “nature-mindfulness” or mindfulness as original nature itself, and (3) “action-mindfulness” or mindfulness to practice with heedfulness. We can supplement and expand the meaning of mindfulness in the overall context of Buddhist practice by proposing an integrated model of mindful practice that encompasses the three aspects of mindfulness. And by using this model, we can overcome the various criticisms and limitations imposed on mindfulness.
