ABSTRACT

Research using social survey data is increasingly popular among researchers of religious studies. This paper reviews the state of social survey research in religious studies and discusses the pros and cons of existing surveys. It makes a case for social survey research going beyond simple fact-finding surveys which often either lack a clear research question or fail to meet methodological standards. It also discusses several important points that we should pay attention to when designing religion surveys. Lastly, to illustrate how a social survey is actually planned and conducted, this paper introduces two on-going research efforts: (1) Survey on Ecological Attitudes among Different Religious Groups conducted by the Institute for Religion and Civic Culture at Kyung Hee University, (2) Survey of Religiosity and Spirituality in the Global East, an international survey project.
