ABSTRACT

Humanity society faces the risk of extinction due to ecosystem destruction and climate crisis. Humanity relies on several technologies for survival strategies to avoid catastrophic situations. However, the grand project for the salvation of mankind cannot be accomplished only with technological measures. Along with this, mental and conscious transformation based on religiosity must go hand in hand. This paper examines this possibility through the reinterpretation of Donghak as an ecological religion based on the theism of Je-woo Choi and Si-hyung Choi. Donghak was a people-based religion of salvation that was born in response to the national and class contradictions caused by the fall of the ruling class and the Seosedongjeom(西勢東漸). However, in the face of the threat to human survival, Donghak needs a new interpretation. In other words, it needs to be reinterpreted as a religion of globality beyond the realm of locality. From this point of view, this paper examines the opportunity for Donghak to be reevaluated from an academic evaluation as a region-based religion of salvation to save the Korean people and grassroots to an ecological religion based on coexistence that extends to humanity, the global village, and the universe.
