ABSTRACT

This article aims to explore ‘恩’ as the ideological foundation of the Won-buddhism Carbon Neutral Movement. The environmental movement of Won-buddhism has been continuously developed from participation in the life and peace movement to the current carbon neutrality movement. This trend stems from responding to the calling of the times. As the current carbon neutrality movements of Won-buddhism began to respond to the climate crisis and cooperate with national policies, they mean a response of the times. The Grace doctrine as the basis of the carbon neutrality movement can be examined in three aspects: the nature, action, and diffusion of ‘恩’. In other words, ‘恩’ is explained by the nature of life, the infinite generation of absolute positivity, and the spread through the symbiosis of peace. These three factors serve as the ideological foundation for the Won-buddhism Carbon Neutral Movement in two aspects. First, Grace doctrine, the core doctrine of Won-buddhism, can meet the pan-religious value of "life peace" and function as a universal idea in the era of the climate crisis. Second, the Won-buddhism Carbon Neutral Movement can be continued effectively and systematically.
