ABSTRACT

This study was prepared to examine the history of Chinese language learning by European missionaries in the 16th to 18th centuries. Through this, the purpose is to Seek the pioneering of a new research area, ‘history of Chinese language education’, and to understand the establishment of ‘Chinese language theology (Chinese language missionary theology)’ in East Asia. From the perspective of European Missionaries’ Sinology, The development of the argument was aimed at examining the specific situation and achievements of Chinese language learning conducted by Michele Pompilio Ruggieri (羅明堅, 1543-1607), the first Jesuit missionary who settled in China during the late Ming Dynasty. This theme provides a significant intellectual inspiration for pioneering the history of Chinese language education in that all East Asian countries share their excellent traditional cultures through the Classical Chinese, a common written language in East Asia. In the same context, the accommodationist ‘documentary (literal) mission’ led by Jesuit missionariy sinologists overlaps with the establishment process of Chinese language theology. Therefore, it is noteworthy that the Chinese catechesis documents and Christian poetry materials left by Ruggieri form the beginning of Chinese language theology. Of course, this includes the unique early accommodationist development of fusion with Buddhism practiced by Ruggieri.
