ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to examine the characteristics of the daily religious life of Won-Buddhism by surveying the annual rituals and how the religious life of one year is organized. A study on the annual religious life provides a good opportunity to understand the characteristics of Won-Buddhism. In order to achieve this purpose, the study was divided into three areas: daily religious life of Won-Buddhists, annual religious rituals of Won-Buddhist headquarters and annual religious life in Won-Buddhist temples. This paper discusses the religious duties conferred on Won-Buddhists in the process of becoming a Won-Buddhist and specifically looks at daily religious life centering on the methods of daily Dharma Training. Next, it elucidates the Four Celebrations and Two Memorial Services of Won-Buddhism and their composition to examine the one-year cycle of Won-Buddhism’s religious life. The paper also examines aspects of the communal religious life of Won-Buddhists through the dharma meeting, the activity of edification units (a group of ten persons which was organized for religious edification) and fixed-term training at a Won-Buddhism temple. This study demonstrates that Won-Buddhism can be characterized as a religion for daily life that is not limited to the time and place of religious practice.
