ABSTRACT

Phrenology, which in Oriental studies is the study of appearance, has been passed down as mystical studies on appearance and is emerging as the field of study and learning today. Phrenology is important in that it is an academic study that discovers one’s personality or future destiny through appearance, and in that it is an area that pioneers unknown fields. In this study, we would like to examine physiognomy as a new academic area that has emerged and also study the image or appearance of the mind which is important in phrenology. While physiognomy is a way of approaching the study of personality or character based on the appearance of a human body or a skeleton, the image or appearance of the appearance can be seen as important in that it takes the approach whereby the inner self can be perceived and revealed through observing mental attitudes or behavior . Therefore, given that the limitations of physiognomy in that it focuses only on outer appearance, we cannot help but bear in mind that the approach adopted through mind appearance is a more rational and reasonable way, as well as overcoming the stereotype associated with physiognomy. This research is valuable in that it is difficult to grasp the whole nature of human beings by outer appearance alone, and the mind appearance that explores the inner world will help overcome the limitations of physiognomy. This is related to the fact that access to appearance of the mind through years of experience will be helpful for the recognition of the appearance of the face.
