ABSTRACT

Nanyang Huizhong(南阳慧忠) was a dharma disciple of the Sixth Patriarch, Huineng, and served as the national teacher of the three emperors of Xuanzong, Suzong, and Daizong. In this thesis, his life, which was published in various biography, was considered, and the seon thought appeared in Nanyang Huizhong Guoshiyu, which was published in Volume 28 of Jingde Chuandeng Liu, was considered. Huizhong received ordination at the age of 16 as a disciple of Huineng, and after obtaining the heart-seal from Huineng, he stayed for 40 years in Dangzigu in Bai yashan in Nanyang, where he practiced and educated. As he became famous, he entered the palace at the invitation of the emperor. After that, he stayed in the capital of the empire for more than 18 years and served as the national teacher. In the process, various Buddhist temples were created to revive Buddhism, which had been devastated by the An Shi zhi luan. In this paper, the seon thought of Huizhong were considered as criticism of the nature of Jianwenjuezhi(見聞覺知), Buddha-nature of non-sentient beings and the preaching of non-sentient beings, the existence and extinction of Buddha-nature and no mind. As a whole, Huizhong's seon thought is based on the seon thought of Huineng's Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch. Thoughts such as ‘Buddha-nature of non-sentient beings’ and ‘no mind’ stand out as an improvement on the precepts of Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch. From this point, it can be said that the significance of Huizhong's seon thought can be found.
