ABSTRACT

This essay comparatively explores two Japanese different viewpoints on civilization and Choson(Korea) in the Meiji period. One is Fukuzawa Yukichi(福澤諭吉), the other is Tanaka Shozo(田中正造). Fukuzawa defined civilization as “a state of developed matter using human’s wisdom,” and suggested ‘theory of Choson revolution using military forces.’ Thus, the theory of civilization of Fukuzawa allows violence. In this respect, can be called as “a matter-centered civilization from outside.” Tanaka Shozo appreciated the Tonghak peasant army as “moral” and “civilized.” He felt sorry for Japanese army’s suppression of the Tonghak peasant army and the failure of Choson’s revolution by people. Thus, Tanaka’s theory of civilization can be called as a “a moral-centered civilization from inside.”
