AB - This paper seeks an alternative that can overcome the conflict between religion and the state after the pandemic. In this paper, I will argue that the ultimate solution to this conflict lies in the formation of a relationship of governance between religion and the state. In order to discuss the desirable relationship between religion and the state, it is necessary to understand the historical source of the conflict. The origin of this conflict can be said to be in the separation of church and state, a well-known principle since the Western modern era. According to this principle, religion belongs to the private sphere, and the state belongs to the public sphere.
However, the discussion of the public nature of religion, which Habermas has recently paid attention to, provides a theoretical basis for forming a desirable relationship between religion and the state. Won Buddhism's idea of the opening of the second new heaven(後天開闢), and the ecological movement can be said to provide a good example in forming a new area of a religious public; that is, an ecological public. This case can be said to provide a good example for various religions in Korea to cooperate with the state. And won Buddhism's idea of the opening of the second new heaven(後天開闢) and public ecological activities can be a good alternative to help overcome a disaster in any country, or an ecological crisis at the global level.
