ABSTRACT

Etienne Cabet(1788-1856) does not belong to the utopian socialists defined by K. Marx and F. Engels in the Communist Manifesto, but to a special case of French republican. C. H. Johnson, an american historian who introduced us the Icarian communism of E. Cabet does not seem to free himself from the Marxist conception of communism and the context of Cold War in the 1960s. He belittles the relationship among the Icarian Communism ‘the French Revolution’ and the French Republic. We think his conclusions which underline Icarian communism as a specific phase in the reaction of working masses to the upheaval produced by political and economic modernization are untenable. The most important thing in the Icarian communism of Cabet is the principle of total democracy. For Cabet, republic, democracy, socialism are essentially the same thing. In this sense, Cabet was one of the anticipator of the republican socialists like Jaurès.
