ABSTRACT

Even though the bourgeois’ argument that the sexuality of the nobility in the Ancien Régime was corrupted, the nobles had developed their own way of understanding other gender from competitive extra-marital relationships. However, the segregation of public and private spheres after the French Revolution made the contradiction of women’s two images, femmes fatales in the street and descent wives in the bourgeois family, clearer than ever. Separate worlds and different value systems made bourgeois men regarded women as the object not to understand but to conquer.
