ABSTRACT

Philippe IV came to the throne, inheriting divine kingship and a huge debt at the same time. The strengthening of his kingship led inevitably to the campaigns against powerful feudal princes, which in turn caused fiscal crisis. Because of the administrative problems, it was difficult to collect different taxes. The fiscal bankrupcy was avoided through the devaluation of the money in irregular terms. However, this means led to the riots of the people, what Philippe IV had to escape in the year 1306. It was relatively easy to untangle the financial problems through the confiscation of the particular groups, who possessed property, but neither privileges nor prestiges. To those groups belonged the Jews, the merchants or bankers out of the Lombardy and further the Templars. They were accused of the manipulated immoral or unholy charges, which led either to the expulsion or to the inquisition. So Philippe IV had exploited a great sum of money in the short term. The dissolution of the Order of the Templars was to be understood in the scope of the violent government of Philippe IV. It took long time with difficulty to punish the Templars as the heretics, because only the Pope had the right to proceed the inquisition. Philippe IV allowed the French inquisitors to use the torture and enforced Pope Clemens V to sentence quickly the dissolution of the Order accused of the heresy. However, Clemens V was weak and cunning and delayed the process. He could not protest the claims of Philippe IV. It was his aim to uphold the right to depose of the property through the long negotiations. The Order of the Temple was traded with the abruption of the posthumous judgement of the Pope Bonifacius VIII. As the result its property was transferred to the Order of the Hospital with some loss.
