AB - 19세기, 네덜란드로부터 알자스와 스위스를 거쳐 롬바르디아로 이어지는 유럽 중부에서는, 세대를 이어가며 기업을 경영하는 경영자 가문들을 쉽게 찾아볼 수 있다. 특히 알자스의 프로테스탄트 가문과 유대교 가문의 가족적 특성과 그로 인해 나타나는 독특한 기업경영 방식을 살펴보는 이 논문은, ‘권위적인 직계가족’의 계몽주의 세례를 받은 가문들 중에서, 종교적인 구원이 현실적인 사업 성공과 연계되는 종교적 심성으로 인해 독특한 기업가 정신이 만들어졌으며, 이 전통이 수 세대를 걸쳐 이어지면서 가업의 확대와 발전에 영향을 미쳤음을 잘 보여주고 있다. 사회조직의 가장 원시적인 형태인 가문이 가장 근대적인 형태의 산업과 결합되면서도 효율적인 경영이 가능하도록, 창업자들은 후손들을 교육시키고 다른 기업가 가문들과의 족내혼을 통해 가족 내의 통합력을 높였으며, 경영의 위기 상황 역시 가족의 통합력을 통해 타개해 나갔다. 외부에서 고용한 전문경영인이 아니라 가족 구성원들을 훈련시켜 전문적인 경영인으로 키우는 알자스 기업가문들의 예는 19세기 프랑스 기업들이 비록 가족기업의 형태를 취하기는 하지만 그 경영자들 역시 전문 경영인으로서 뛰어난 능력을 보였음을 입증한다.
