ABSTRACT

Around the year of 1900, some historians advanced a “classical” theory according to which the classical manor system had been dominant in the western Europe throughout the Middle Ages. Especially since World War II, however, it has been argued that this theory may be applicable only to the northern Gaul during the Carolingian dynasty. But, for example, serfs of the Eastern Europe performed heavy labour services which allow to presuppose a structure of the classical manorialism. So it is necessary to reestablish the status of the classical manorialism at European level. On the other hand, there is a big difference of opinion among historians about the formative period of the classical manorialism. Such different views are due to different ideas of the system. It is therefore necessary to clearly define the conception.
