ABSTRACT

Vertriebene and Pieds-Noirs in Postwar Germany and France(2016) is one of the pioneering attempts to compare both groups systematically and placing them within larger processes that reshaped Europe after World War II. This article first examines the strentghs and weaknesses of the comparative historical approach adopted by this work. At the same time, it raises the question of whether Vertriebene and Pieds-Noirs can be put into the category of the refugee. The rethinking both groups from the perspective of the refugee is directly linked to the important question of what constitutes proper objects of refugee studies. In short, this article seek to examine the definition of the refugee and its postwar temporal, geographical and conceptual boundaries in order to probe the systematic exclusions of certain experiences from refugee studies and to think about useful new frames for analysis.
