ABSTRACT

In January 2021, historian Benjamin Stora submitted a report titled "Memory Issues Relating to Colonization of Algeria and the Algerian War" to French President Emmanuel Macron. The aim of this report is to overcome the memory war that is taking place among French society and between France and Algeria and to achieve reconciliation of memory through the work of history and memory. The purpose of this paper is to show from recent research that the relationship between the various memory groups, which is supposed to be taking place inside France, is not in a state of war, and therefore the goal of reconciliation of memories misses the mark. For French society to integrate, concrete efforts to overcome racism are needed, rather than memory work, and this will lay the groundwork for reparation for the colonization of Algeria.
