ABSTRACT

Saint-Denis was the most industrialized city in the Ile-de-France region, with the exception of Paris, and the industrialization of Saint-Denis progressed gradually in the first half of the 19th century and began to flourish after the administrative reorganization of 1860. The Saint-Denis industry, which developed during the First World War and the interwar period, underwent deindustrialization following the government's policy of decentralization after the Second World War and the economic crisis of the 1970s. As Saint-Denis is the most industrialized city, it has been hit hard by deindustrialization, making it a city where unemployment has risen and poverty has intensified. Furthermore, as the abandoned industrial facilities gave a negative image of Saint-Denis, the City of Saint-Denis attempted to renew itself in order to overcome this negative image. The "Plaine Renaissance" project, which can be called the urban redevelopment project, was designed to overcome economic poverty caused by deindustrialization and revitalize the economy. At the same time, a movement has emerged to improve the value of neglected industrial facilities as an industrial heritage and to preserve the history of industrialization in Saint-Denis. The "Local Planning Plan" has succeeded in protecting part of the industrial facilities as an industrial heritage, which has helped to represent the history of the Saint-Denis industry.
