AB - This study compares the idea of New Urbanism with the reality through the case of Kentlands, MD. New Urbanism is not a panacea unlike its popular image. This study identifies that several things which are not able to be achieved in reality are included in its principle. New Urbanism may contribute to the attainment of self-containment and improvement of view and environmental aspects, judged from the example of Kentlands. Meanwhile, the approach does not seem very helpful in improving the sustainability of the transportation system. In addition, this study identifies that social mixing is nothing but a slogan and citizen participation has not produced some concrete products so far.
