ABSTRACT

Since Korea Train Express (KTX) started running in 2004, the number of air passengers in Korean local airports is consistently decreasing. Furthermore, if Honam High Speed Railway opens in 2015 and KTX departing from Suseo railway station begins running in 2016, local airports, especially general local airports with no regular international flights are expected to have more difficulties. This study is a case study of Yeosu Airport, where passengers are dramatically decreasing due to the increased usage of KTX since 2011, and the study focuses on improving competitiveness against KTX. As for the result, reconverting air passengers that have already transferred to KTX and preventing future conversions as well as creating new airline demand have been shown to be the revitalizing measures for Yeosu Airport. For specific methods, it suggests reduction of total transport cost through regular discounting of air freight charge and organizing airport-accessing transport system, securing fixed demand class linked with industrial complex and public offices, and creating new demand with tourism industry and MICE. It also emphasizes the importance of administrative and financial support system from local governments near Yeosu airport.
