ABSTRACT

This study analyzes the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the length of stay and expenditures of tourists visiting the Yeongdong region using propensity score matching analysis and data from the National Travel Survey conducted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2019, 2020, and 2021. The propensity score matching analysis showed that the COVID-19 pandemic decreased tourists’ length of stay and increased their expenditures on restaurants, groceries, and shopping, while decreasing their expenditures on travel activities and precious metal purchases. The above analysis shows how tourists who visited Yeongdong region in Gangwon-do, during the COVID-19 pandemic made choices to comply with the government’s social distancing measures and realize their tourism desires while ensuring their safety. The analysis shows that shortening length of stay and seeking small but sure happiness in trips were the choices made by tourists in the Yeongdong region during the pandemic. Shortening the length of stay was a way for tourists to reduce the risk of infection. The pursuit of small but sure happiness means that tourists who were limited in the activities they could experience at tourist destinations under social distancing tried to overcome this situation by pursuing the small but sure pursuit of happiness through gastronomy which was available through delivery, takeout, and other options.
