ABSTRACT

This study aims to examine the competitive and interlinked structure of regional tourism markets in Jeollabuk-do, South Korea, based on tourism output across its 14 cities and counties. To achieve this objective, the study applies niche theory to analyze niche breadth, niche overlap, and niche superiority among local governments. Tourism output is operationalized using six indicators of tourism activity: the number of domestic non-resident visitors, the number of foreign visitors, average length of stay, domestic tourism expenditure, foreign tourism expenditure, and the volume of tourism-related social media mentions. The results indicate that Iksan City and Jeonju City exhibit high levels of niche breadth and evenness, suggesting that these destinations have secured balanced tourism outputs across multiple indicators. In contrast, Jangsu County and Sunchang County show relatively narrow niche breadth, implying a strong dependence on specific tourism outputs. The niche overlap analysis reveals a high degree of overlap between Jeonju City and Iksan City, indicating that the two destinations compete for similar tourist segments within the regional tourism market. Furthermore, the niche superiority analysis demonstrates that Jeonju City holds a comparative advantage over most other regions in terms of overall tourism output. By structurally analyzing coexistence and competition within the tourism system of Jeollabuk-do, with Jeonju City as a reference point, this study provides meaningful insights into the current regional tourism landscape and contributes to the formulation of evidence-based regional tourism policies. The findings offer empirical support for the development of interregional cooperative strategies aimed at mitigating excessive competition and promoting integrated, wide-area tourism development in Jeollabuk-do.
