ABSTRACT

This study examines the relationship between the introduction and expansion of high-speed rail (HSR) and changes in regional employment disparities within the Gyeongbu HSR corridor in South Korea. Treating the corridor as a functional region, the study analyzes employment convergence among 33 cities and counties from 2000 to 2023 using a conditional beta-convergence model. HSR connectivity is measured using HSR station opening status, the number of HSR routes, and hub status to examine differences in employment convergence across levels of connectivity. The main findings are as follows: (1) significant employment convergence was observed within the Gyeongbu HSR corridor, with stronger convergence in regions served by HSR than in non-served regions; (2) while no significant difference in the employment convergence was found when the number of HSR routes was treated as a continuous variable, regions served by four or more routes exhibited stronger convergence than the reference group when connectivity was specified categorically; and (3) differences in employment convergence across levels of HSR connectivity were more pronounced during the network expansion period (2011–2023). These findings suggest that employment convergence varies not only with the presence of HSR service but also with the level of connectivity within the HSR network.
