ABSTRACT

This study explores how place-shaping occurs and how perceptions of academic libraries are constructed, focusing on student users of academic libraries. To this end, in-depth interviews were conducted with ten student users of academic libraries, and the data are analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). The results are interpreted using Self-Determination Theory (SDT), indicating that individual users select and construct specific places to fulfill psychological needs. Furthermore, it is suggested that different contextual factors shape place by influencing the process of need fulfillment, and that multiple place experiences are integrated into a holistic perception of libraries.
