AB - PURPOSE: This study examined the effects of the seat depth on the trunk and lower extremity muscle activity and fatigue during sitting to identify the biomechanical characteristics related to postural control. METHODS: Thirty healthy college students in their twenties participated. The participants sat on a backless chair with four seat depths corresponding to 30%, 45%, 60%, and 75% of a buttock–popliteal length. The measurements were taken in a standardized posture with the hips and knees at 90° and feet on the floor. Surface electromyography electrodes were attached to the erector spinae, external oblique, and rectus femoris to measure the muscle activity and fatigue. The data were collected for three minutes per condition, with a ten-minute rest between conditions. The order of the seat depth conditions was randomly assigned, and the experiments were conducted under identical conditions. RESULTS: Significant differences in muscle activity were observed according to the seat depth. The erector spinae muscle showed the highest activity at the deepest seat depth (75%), whereas the external oblique muscle showed lower activity at this depth. The rectus femoris muscle showed the lowest activity at a seat depth of 60%. No significant differences in muscle fatigue were observed among the conditions. CONCLUSION: Increasing the seat depth altered the trunk and lower extremity muscle activation patterns, with greater activity in the erector spinae and rectus femoris at deeper seat depths. These findings suggest that appropriate seat depth selection may enhance trunk stability and provide fundamental data for musculoskeletal health management.
