ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study investigated the differential effects of hip and ankle strengthening exercises on the static and dynamic balance in young women with chronic ankle instability (CAI). METHODS: Twenty-three young women with CAI were assigned randomly to either a hip strengthening (HS) (n = 12) or an ankle strengthening (AS) group (n = 11). Both groups performed their respective strengthening programs for 40 minutes, twice weekly. The static and dynamic balance were measured before and after the intervention. RESULTS: In static balance with eyes open, the trace length showed significantly greater improvement in the HS group than in the AS group, while no significant changes were found within the groups. In the static balance with the eyes closed, the C90 area significantly decreased in the HS group. In dynamic balance, the leftward direction showed significantly greater improvement in the AS group than in the HS group. Significant increases in dynamic balance within groups were observed; significant increases were noted in forward, backward, leftward, and rightward directions in the HS group, and in the forward, leftward, and rightward directions for the AS group. CONCLUSION: Hip strengthening exercises are more effective for static stability, whereas ankle strengthening exercises are more effective for dynamic stability in young adult women with CAI.
