ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study evaluated the effects of whole-body vibration (WBV) on balance and functional independence in school-aged children with cerebral palsy. METHODS: Eleven school-aged children with cerebral palsy were assigned randomly to either the experimental group (n = 5) or the control group (n = 6). The intervention was conducted at a special education school (S school) for 40 minutes per session, three times per week, for eight weeks (24 sessions). The experimental group received 30 minutes of conventional therapy and 10 minutes of WBV, whereas the control group received 40 minutes of conventional therapy, including strengthening, range of motion, balance, and gait training. The outcome measures included the Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS), Korean version of the Pediatric Balance Scale (K-PBS), BioRescue system, Functional Independence Measure for Children (WeeFIM), and the Modified Barthel Index (MBI). RESULTS: In the experimental group, significant within-group change rates were observed in the WeeFIM, MBI, K-PBS, and all BioRescue parameters, whereas the control group showed significant change rates in the MBI, K-PBS, and all BioRescue parameters, but not in the WeeFIM. The between-group comparisons of the change rates showed a significant difference only in WeeFIM, with no significant differences in MBI, K-PBS, or BioRescue parameters. CONCLUSION: Whole-body vibration combined with conventional therapy can contribute to greater improvement in functional independence, as reflected by the significant between-group difference in the WeeFIM change rates, in school-aged children with cerebral palsy.
