ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study examined the effects of task-oriented training on activities of daily living (ADL) and distress levels in patients with stroke. Specifically, it investigated whether task-oriented training provides greater therapeutic benefits than conventional neurodevelopmental treatment for improving functional independence and reducing distress. METHODS: Forty patients with stroke were randomly assigned to either an experimental group (n = 20), who received task-oriented training, or a control group (n = 20), who received neurodevelopmental treatment. Both interventions were administered three times per week for four weeks under the same training conditions. ADL and distress levels were assessed before and after the intervention using standardized assessment procedures. RESULTS: Both groups showed significant improvements in ADL and distress levels after the four-week intervention compared with baseline (p < .05). Between-group comparisons indicated that the experimental group demonstrated significantly greater improvements in both ADL performance and distress levels than the control group (p < .05). CONCLUSION: Task-oriented training was more effective than neurodevelopmental treatment in improving ADL and reducing distress in patients with stroke. Repeated practice of meaningful and goal-directed functional tasks may have contributed to reducing learned non-use while enhancing motivation, active participation, and engagement in rehabilitation. These findings support the clinical application of task-oriented approaches as an effective rehabilitation strategy for patients with stroke. Further studies are needed to investigate long-term effects and applicability across diverse clinical settings.
