Pulmonary Function and Trunk Control in Patients with Stroke: Exploratory Study

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This exploratory study analyzed the association between pulmonary function and trunk control in patients with stroke at the pre-intervention assessment, with age included as a covariate. Stroke often leads to respiratory muscle weakness and reduced trunk stability, which may act as constraints on functional recovery. This study aimed to offer foundational information for the design of subsequent intervention strategies by characterizing the baseline relationship between these factors. METHODS: Twenty inpatients with stroke and at least three months post-onset underwent pulmonary function testing to measure the FVC, FEV1, FEV1/FVC ratio, and PEF. Chest expansion was also assessed using a tape measure. Trunk control was evaluated with the K-TIS. Multiple linear regression was performed with K-TIS score as the dependent variable, FVC and chest expansion as independent variables, and age as the covariate. RESULTS: The mean age of the participants was 70.90 ± 12.10 years. The mean FVC, chest expansion, and mean K-TIS score were 1.85 ± .75 L, 3.24 ± 1.25 cm, and 12.30 ± 4.07 points, respectively. The multiple linear regression model showed that the FVC was positively associated with the K-TIS score (β = 4.26, p = .019), whereas chest expansion and age were not significantly related to the K-TIS score in this sample. CONCLUSION: FVC showed a significant positive association with trunk control in stroke patients, suggesting that pulmonary volume may be related to trunk function. An integrated assessment of pulmonary and trunk function is recommended in stroke rehabilitation, and larger prospective studies will be needed to clarify how this relationship affects rehabilitation strategies and outcomes.
