AB - Values clarification (VC) is a core mechanism of patient decision aids (PtDAs) that helps patientsalign the benefits, harms, burdens, and uncertainties of available options with their personal values.
This descriptive exploratory study empirically analyzes the linguistic forms, structural functions, and sociocultural contexts of VC modules in PtDAs developed in South Korea. Eight Korean PtDAswere selected through criterion-based purposive sampling. VC-related content was extracted basedon the International Patient Decision Aid Standards (IPDAS) and evaluated via qualitative contentanalysis, utilizing independent open coding, categorization, and thematic abstraction. The analyzedVC modules predominantly employed explicit response formats, including Likert scales, sliders, and checklists, primarily structured as first-person declarative sentences. Nine categories emergedacross two distinct functional domains: five addressing value clarification (outcomes, experientialvalues, burden/acceptability, daily life/quality of life, and autonomy/control) and four concerningthe decision-making context (knowledge/information, decision role, readiness/uncertainty, andpractical circumstances). The findings indicate that PtDAs should distinguish values clarificationfrom knowledge or process assessments, explicitly connect patients’ priorities to concrete trade-offsbetween options, and thereby foster value-concordant dialogue between patients and healthcareprofessionals.
