ABSTRACT

This study aimed to research the current use of mobile devices, which will have a pivotal role in the ubiquitous learning, as well as to suggest developmental directions for English language training based on the results of the study. There were 1,500 students from various universities nationwide who participated in this survey and 1,999 samples were refined from the original data. The questions asked in this survey focused on the use of seven different mobile device types: laptop computers, PMPs (portable multimedia players), PDAs (Personal Digital Assistance devices), mobile phones, UMPCs (Ultra Mobile PCs), MP3 players, as well as portable game players. The research findings could be summarized as follows. First, the mobile phone proved to be the most popular device. Second, the number of participants owning two devices was larger than any other group. Third, PC type devices, such as laptops or UMPCs, were most frequently used in English learning. Fourth, participants who had experience studying using mobile devices answered that this type of device was most effective in developing listening skills. Based on the results, this study presented two suggestions to boost the use of mobile devices in English learning: developing diverse English learning contents for mobile devices as well as developing various teaching methods utilizing mobile devices would encourage the use of these devices in future language teaching.
