ABSTRACT

This study aims to analyze the current national level qualifying tests for English teacher candidates of secondary schools. It analyzes the 120 test items from 2009 to 2011 in terms of the test question types and percentages of different fields of major and suggests some ideas to make the tests more efficient in serving its purpose. The question types of the tests are identified as 5 kinds of types, which are a best answer selection type, a sentence completion type, a negative question type, a correct answer selection type, and all the correct answers selection type. The most frequently used types of questions are all the correct answers selection type and a best answer selection type. The tests consist of the five major parts, which are listening, and general English reading, English education, English linguistics including syntax, phonetics, morphology, pragmatics, and cultural knowledge about English as well as English and American literature. Although the tests are made up with the major parts, the number of questions and their sub-domains varies each year. Based on the results of the study, further pedagogical implications and future study directions are suggested.
