ABSTRACT

The purpose of this research is to understand historical change of English language education in Korea by using both Chosun ilbo newspaper articles and academic literature review. 1,537 articles between 1980 and 2011, selected from the Chosun archive, were classified into different categories, such as pre-school, elementary and secondary school education, admission (testing), non-public education, adult English learning, and English village program. Then they were arranged in chronological order, from the Chun Doo-hwan to the Lee Myung-Bak administration. The findings revealed that the number of the English education-related newspaper articles has increased over the last 30 years. More agenda has been dramatically appearing since 1993, especially during the Roh Moo-hyun administration. The most frequently appearing topics were about elementary and secondary school education, and the next one was about admission (testing). It is hoped that this paper will be informative for the future historical research of English language education in Korea.
