ABSTRACT

The educational paradigm has been shifted to emphasize learner’s creativeness and self-directed learning since the entry of digital era. Along with the new direction of education, innovative technology based instruction has been supported. This study aims to reveal the effects of blended learning with digital English materials on reading achievement and self directed learning ability. For this purpose a treatment group was compared with a control group after digital English textbook based blended learning in terms of reading skill and self-directed learning ability. The results indicated that the blended learning has a positive effect on the treatment group. Also in depth interview and investigation of the students in the blended learning group revealed that their positive attitude toward the blended learning activities. Various and interesting functions of digital English textbooks helped the students to raise their interest and to participate actively in blended learning activities. Follow-up research is needed for students to utilize effectively the characteristics of digital English textbooks in their self-directed blended learning.
