ABSTRACT

This study examines the adequacy of models of second language (L2) listening ability in order to better understand what its components are and the relationships among these components. The focus of the investigation was placed on two sets of the listening tests that are administered nationwide: The Nationwide Listening Comprehension Test (NLCT) and the College Scholarly Aptitude Test (CSAT). Data were collected from 97 high school students learning English in Korea. After a series of confirmatory factor analyses, the present study found a model of L2 listening ability that was supported by the data. According to the final model, L2 listening ability involves L2 learners’ factual, inferential and global understandings of given information. The results also suggest that L2 listening ability is better examined when the listening construct is measured in relation to test items measuring ability to choose appropriate responses in communicative situations. Lastly, detailed findings, implications and suggestions for further research will be discussed.
