ABSTRACT

This cross-cultural study explores metacognitive online reading strategies used among university students in four non-native English speaking countries. 132students in Cambodia, Kenya, Korea, and Thailand responded to an online survey of reading strategies (OSORS), and later two from each country were engaged in a think-aloud online reading task. The survey data was analyzed to examine whether there were any differences among the students from the four countries in their reported use of strategies. The think-aloud data was also analyzed to determine what strategies the students actually used as well as the ways and the reasons of using them. No noticeable differences were found between the overall students’ reported use and actual use of strategies. Interestingly, Kenyan students showed some differences from Asian counterparts in their strategy use. Possible reasons and implications are discussed.
