ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to suggest a lesson model for the development of creativity and character in secondary English classrooms through employing cooperative learning. The development of creativity and character has become a key feature in the educational goals of the 2009 revised National Curriculum since creativity and character are core competences of individuals that would contribute to the advancement of national competitiveness in the global era. Even though there have been some pedagogical practices to introduce creative thinking skills into English classrooms, little research has been carried out on how to implement creativity and character enhancement in English teaching. A recent survey of English teachers showed that divergent thinking, diversity, openness, consideration for others, and responsibility are components of creativity and character highly related to the English subject. Cooperative learning has been an effective instructional approach to encourage students’ positive interdependence and individual responsibility. This study, therefore, firstly reviews the theoretical rationale that guide the integration of creativity learning frameworks and cooperative learning models in the foreign language classroom. Secondly, this study attempts to suggest English teaching models which combine creativity-eliciting techniques and cooperative learning structures to foster Korean EFL learners’ divergent thinking and to promote communication skills in small cooperative groups.
