ABSTRACT

Although article errors from Korean learners are abundant, few studies have investigated how to teach articles to overcome the specific difficulties faced by Koreans. This study aims to examine the effects of co-presenting English indefinite articles with count nouns on Korean young learners’ vocabulary learning. An experiment was conducted with 174 elementary school students divided into two groups: a present-article group and a non-present-article group. The groups were taught the same vocabulary items but with different materials; one received articles-nounscombined materials and the other received nouns-only materials. The results showed that the co-presentation of indefinite articles with singular nouns during vocabulary teaching was more effective than the presentation of nouns without articles in terms of developing L2 sentence-completion ability in students. In addition, the co-presentation group was more successful in including indefinite articles when converting plural nouns to singular nouns. The study suggests that the co-presentation of indefinite articles with count nouns during vocabulary instruction can significantly improve elementary school students’ ability to use indefinite articles.
