ABSTRACT

This study investigated whether Korean Second Language (L2) learners’ overpassivisation errors can be remedied by form-focused activities (input enhancement and written corrective input). The participants were randomly allotted to one of three groups: input enhancement, written corrective input, and control group. All of them carried out a grammaticality judgement task for pretest, one of treatment and reading comprehension tasks (one group for input enhancement, another group for written corrective input, and the other group without any treatment), and a grammaticality judgement task for post-test. The results of the experiment showed that the participants in the two experimental groups (the input enhancement and the written corrective input group) were able to correctly judge the passive form more than the control group. In addition, this study examined whether L2 learners could apply the correct rule to the new intransitive verbs, and it found that the difference of the post-test scores between both the experimental groups and the control group were not statistically significant. In sum, this study showed that the use of input enhancement and written corrected input activities has positive effects on Korean learners’ correct use of passive structures but did not show their generalization to novel items.
